Reflexology

What is Reflexology?
Reflexology springs from the observation that tension in
specific areas of the foot corresponds to tension in certain parts of
the body. For example, treatment to the big toes can have therapeautic
effects on the head. Treating the whole foot treats the whole body. Reflexology
focusses on the base of the foot and VRT(Vertical Reflex Therapy) treats
the foot in a standing position.
How can the Reflexology Help?
Reflexology can help by with the following:
- Relieve stress and tension
- Improve nerve function and blood supply
- Strengthen the immune system
- Restore and maintain a healthy balance in mind and body
- Improve mobility
- Muscular and Skeletal Problems
- Headaches & Migraine
- Digestive & Bowel Problems
- Respiratory Condition
- Gynaecological Problems
- Prostate Problems
- Allergies
- Arthritic Conditions
- Many other problems
A course of Reflexology treatment usually spans 4 to 6 sessions
of 45 minutes. VRT is recommended to be practiced in short, five minute
sessions which can be at the beginning and end of a Reflexology session.
How did the Reflexology Originate?
Reflexology was practiced by early Chiniese, Indian and
Egyptian civilisations. Evidence for the practice is shown on the tomb
of a doctor in Saqqara, Egypt. It is likely that the art spread from Egypt
through the Roman Empire and beyond.
Dr Shelby Riley and Dr William Fitzgerald developed "Zone
Therapy" in 1900. This was the theory that applying pressure to certain
points (reflexes) would relieve pain in other, corresponding areas of
the body.
Eunice Ingham developed a further foot reflex theory in
the 1930's.
